On Friday,
January 15, 2010, the United Haitian American Society of
Norwalk (UHAS), held a 3rd meeting and invited the general
public to continue discussions and planning of Relief and
Recovery Efforts for the victims of the devastating
earthquake that hit Haiti Tuesday afternoon, January 12,
2010. Due to several fundraising efforts, we have raised a
significant amount of money for the Haiti Relief fund. Most
notably, two parochial schools, St. Ann's of Black Rock in
Bridgeport and St. Andrews in Bridgeport, raised over
$1000.00 each during their "pay to dress down" null. The St.
Ann and St. Andrew communities raised both monetary and
nonperishable food and water donations in one day. Way to go
kids! Also notable, under the guidance of teacher, UHAS
committee member, Nathalia Metwally, students at Brien
McMahon High school located in Norwalk have collected a
significant amount for the Haiti Relief Fund. These students
have already begun rehearsals for a performance to benefit
Haiti. Show place and time to be announced.
In addition to our partnership with the local community
including schools to help raise money for Haiti, UHAS is at
the forefront of partnering with other organizations and
business leaders in the community. Pablo De Jesus Colon,
President and CEO of Radio Cumbre, promoted fundraising
efforts on Sunday January 17th, from 9am-6pm at 1057 East
Main St. to benefit victims of Haiti's earthquake. The
coalition of Latino businesses and individuals, known as the
Greater Bridgeport United collected over $30,000.00 toward
the relief effort outside of local supermarkets. UHAS
volunteers, other community organizations and the Mayor of
Bridgeport, Bill Finch participated in this community wide
effort.
UHAS Committee member, Marc Andre and the owner of the Bear
Grill, Chris held a fundraising event at the Bear Grill
located in Fairfield on behalf of UHAS Haiti Relief fund. A
total of $1,011.00 was raised. All proceeds will go to
benefit the victims of the disaster in Haiti.
It is this outpouring of community support that motivates us
to continue our efforts for Haiti. We have several events
planned to raise more money for the Haiti Relief effort.
There will be a concert on Saturday, January 30, 2010 at 7pm
sponsored by the Fairfield Theater Company and
Representative Tony Wong on behalf of UHAS at the Fairfield
Theater Company located at 70 Sandford Street in Fairfield,
CT. All proceeds will go to the Haiti Relief fund. The St.
Ann school community located in Black Rock is sponsoring on
behalf of the Haiti Relief Fund a fundraising Brunch event
on Saturday, January 31, 2010 from 10 until 2pm. During this
event, student art postcards will be sold for $3 each. All
proceeds will go to the Haiti Relief fund. Please check our
Website for upcoming events and dates www.uhasociety.org
We have been contacted by over 75 medical personnel who are
interested in volunteering in Haiti. We recently compiled a
list of 40 personnel that are ready to be deployed
immediately. This list was sent to the Haitian Consulate in
New York and a group from New York was deployed last week.
Our group will be working with Partners in Health, an
indigenous group of Haitian doctors whose hospital is
located in Haiti. We are very proud to be the coordinators
of this effort and will continue to accept names and contact
information on behalf of the Haitian Consulate. If you or
anyone you know wishes to volunteer, please contact us at
866-413-8427 or email at uhasociety@aol.com.
There will be a general body meeting open to the public on
Wednesday, January 27 and Thursday, January 28, 2010 at 7:30
pm at Norwalk City Hall to continue discussions on the Haiti
Relief effort A number of committees met last week week and
will reporting this evening at the general body meeting.
On behalf of UHAS, I would like to thank you all for your
support thus far. From our youngest supporters to our
oldest, we know that it is with your help and prayers that
Haiti will rise up out of the ashes of this devastation.
We are a strong and proud people and . . . l'unité fait la
force. (in unity there is strength)
Sincerely,
Gerry Azor, Jr.
